Pediatric Visual Health Exam

At Visual Health Doctors of Optometry, we’ve crafted a gentle, comprehensive approach to eye care designed specifically for infants and growing children. Because 80% of learning is visual, early detection is the key to preventing academic and social hurdles. Our team ensures a child-friendly, comfortable experience to protect your little one’s vision from their very first milestone

More Than a Checkup: Specialized Care for Growing Eyes

We believe pediatric eye exams are a vital step in supporting your child’s development at every stage. Because children rarely report vision struggles themselves, our doctors use gentle, age-appropriate techniques to identify conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) or myopia early.

Why Early Detection Matters

Identifying and treating vision issues in their earliest stages can protect your child’s long-term developmental success. Our specialized exams are essential for:

  • Evaluating Eye Health: Ensuring all parts of the eye are developing correctly as your child grows.

  • Supporting Visual Function: Checking how the eyes work together for reading and play.

  • Building Confidence: Ensuring your child has the clear vision they need to explore the world and succeed in school.

Advanced Care in a Comfortable Setting

We combine advanced diagnostic technology with a warm, child welcoming environment to ensure the experience is safe and accurate for infants and children alike. By prioritizing eye health today, we help ensure their vision remains clear for life

What to Expect During a Pediatric Eye Exam

Developmental & Vision History Review

We’ll start by discussing your child’s health history, including prenatal and birth history, developmental milestones, and any family history of vision issues. We also want to hear about any concerns you’ve noticed, such as squinting, eye rubbing, or tilting the head.

Visual Acuity Testing (Age-Appropriate)

We measure how clearly your child can see at various distances. For younger children who haven't learned their letters, we use specialized "LEA Symbols" (shapes like apples or houses) or "Tumbling E" charts to make the process fun and accurate.

Binocular Vision & Eye Tracking

This is a critical part of a pediatric exam. We assess how well your child’s eyes work together as a team. We test for eye tracking, focusing skills, and depth perception to ensure their eyes can follow a moving object and transition between near and far objects smoothly.

Pediatric Refraction (Prescription Check)

To determine if your child needs glasses, we conduct a refraction test. For infants or non-verbal children, we use a technique called retinoscopy—shining a light to observe the reflection from the retina—to measure the eye's power without needing the child to speak.

Eye Alignment & Muscle Function

We check for conditions like strabismus (eye turn) or amblyopia (lazy eye). By evaluating the strength and coordination of the eye muscles, we ensure the eyes are perfectly aligned, which is essential for reading and school performance.

Color Vision & Depth Perception Screening

Using colorful plates and 3D images, we screen for color blindness and check how well your child perceives depth. Early detection of color vision deficiency helps parents and teachers adjust learning materials as the child enters school.

External & Internal Eye Health Evaluation

Using a gentle light and magnification, we examine the structures of the front of the eye (cornea, iris, and lens) and the back of the eye (retina and optic nerve). This ensures the eyes are physically healthy and developing as they should.

Binocular Coordination & Teamwork

We perform specific tests to see how the brain and eyes communicate. Good "teamwork" between the eyes is necessary to prevent digital eye strain and ensure your child can keep their place while reading a line of text.

Eye Conditions That Can Be Detected

Refractive Errors

This includes nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, which can make schoolwork and sports difficult.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

A condition where one eye is weaker than the other, often causing the brain to favor the stronger eye. If untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss in the weaker eye.

Strabismus (Eye Misalignment)

When the eyes do not line up with each other or look in different directions. This impacts depth perception and binocular vision.

Convergence Insufficiency

A common condition where the eyes have difficulty teaming together when looking at nearby objects, often leading to eye strain or double vision while reading.

Color Vision Deficiency

Identifying color blindness early helps parents and teachers provide the right learning tools for the classroom.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction

Issues with how the eyes "team" together, which can lead to headaches, dizziness, and difficulty focusing on digital screens or books.

Pediatric Medical Conditions

We also screen for less common but serious issues like congenital cataracts or ptosis (drooping eyelid) that can interfere with healthy visual development.

How Often Should You Schedule an Eye Exam? Your Child’s Vision Roadmap

Visual development happens rapidly in the first few years of life. To ensure your child is hitting their milestones and to catch issues before they impact learning, we recommend the following exam schedule:

  • First Exam (6 to 12 Months): We check for healthy eye development, proper alignment, and basic responsiveness.

  • Preschool Milestone (Age 3): As coordination and depth perception sharpen, we perform more detailed screenings for conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye).

  • School Readiness (Age 5 to 6): Before entering the classroom, a comprehensive exam ensures your child has the visual tools needed for reading, writing, and social success.

  • Annual Exams (Ages 6 to 18): Because children’s eyes change quickly as they grow, yearly exams are vital for maintaining clear vision and tracking developmental shifts.

Proactive Care for Your Child’s Future

While a Pediatric Visual Health Exam identifies current vision needs, some conditions require a more specialized, long-term approach. We are proud to offer advanced solutions for the most common pediatric vision challenges. Common

Conditions & Specialized Solutions
If our doctors identify any of the following during an exam, we will work with you to create a customized treatment plan:

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Treatment may include specialized patching, drops, or vision therapy to strengthen the weaker eye.

Strabismus (Eye Turn)

We offer non-surgical options to improve eye alignment and depth perception.

Binocular Vision Dysfunction

Tailored exercises and prism lenses can help the eyes work together more effectively.

Is Your Child’s Vision Getting Worse Every Year?

Many parents notice that their child requires a stronger prescription at every annual visit. This is often due to Progressive Myopia (nearsightedness). At Visual Health Doctors of Optometry, we don’t just provide stronger glasses—we offer Myopia Management.

Our specialized program uses evidence-based treatments to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, including:

Essilor Stellest with H.A.L.T. Technology:

Advanced spectacle lenses use a "constellation" of 1,021 invisible lenslets to create a signal that slows eye growth and delays the progression of nearsightedness.

MiSight® 1-Day Lenses:

The first FDA-approved soft contact lenses proven to slow myopia progression.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Custom-fitted overnight lenses that gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps.

Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose medicated drops that have been shown to effectively slow eye growth.
